Rome Program

The City

Rome, Italy, is one of the most significant cities in world history. From its legendary founding in 752 BC along the Tiber River in central Italy, it grew to embrace seven hills and to found an empire that spanned the known world. Much of the ideas, art, legal structures, and building techniques of the western world grew out of Roman society. With the advent of Christianity, Rome became recognized as the leading city of Europe in regard to faith; in modern times it is still the center of Roman Catholicism. Within its walls are contained treasures of archeology, art, spirituality, and history that scholars have dedicated lifetimes to exploring. Today’s modern city is the capital of Italy, with a population of over 2.7 million. It has a vibrant film industry, an important scholarly community, and has strong connections to the worlds of art, fashion, and business.

The Program

The Rome campus of CUA is located in central Rome, about a 15 minute walk from either St. Peter’s Basilica or historic Piazza Navona. This one semester program, offered in the fall as well as the spring, will immerse you in the city of Rome and allow you to take advantage of the opportunity to get to know Italian life and culture. The courses and class trips help students to understand Italy and Rome in both its historical and contemporary dimensions. Throughout the semester there are optional activities that explore additional cultural dimensions and the various spiritual aspects of life in Rome. During the semester in Italy, students will be challenged both personally and academically in the courses and in the program activities. They will be rewarded with a deeper understanding of themselves, of Rome, and of western culture.

History is not a book, arbitrarily divided into chapters, or a drama chopped into separate acts: it has flowed forward. Rome is a continuity, called ‘eternal.’ What has accumulated in this place acts on everyone, day and night, like an extra climate.
