At the end of January we went on a group excursion to the area around Naples. The first day was spent exploring the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. Here is the group gathered in an ancient Roman amphitheater, together with Prof. Laura Flusche (lower left corner). This visit to Pompeii was part of her class Introduction to Roman Archaeology.

Classes are often held on site. Here is Dr. David Dawson Vásquez's class, The Papacy and the Development of the Church in Rome during a class on the Counter Reformation papacy at St. Peter's Basilica.

The clear skies and beautiful weather of Rome often permits holding class outside. Here are students studying before class in the Piazza San Pietro. In the background is Bernini's colonnade, commissioned by Pope Alexander VII in the late 17th century.

How wonderful it is to study in Rome! In the background is again Bernini's colonade. Above it are the apartments of Pope John Paul II.

Some scenes from today's class at St. Peter's will give an idea of a typical day in the CUA/DePaul Rome Program. Here you see Dr. Dawson Vásquez, Jennifer Ehman, Katie Boylan, Matt Della Rocca, Lauren Galvin, and Jessica Weaver.

Lisa Bartuccelli reflects upon Bernini's decoration of the interior of St. Peter's while she stands in front of the family symbol of Innocent X Pamphilj, the dove with the olive branch.

Meaghan McIntyre and Meredith Marsico absorb priceless information through listening and note taking.

Dr. Dawson Vásquez discusses the mosaic of Christ walking on water in the portico of St. Peter's, an ancient image showing the utter dependency of the papacy on the guidance and the power of Christ. Rose Galinsky and Katie Hazlett take note of this.

Jennifer Ehman, Dean Pollaro, Caehlin Bell, Lauren Cristella, and Katie Hazlett listen to today's lecture.

During the visit to St. Peter's the class stops for a picture in front of Bernini's symbolic rendition of the Chair of Peter.

Lauren Marchetti and Michelle Holly listen intensely to a class lecture.

The students discuss among themselves during a short break in class. Pictured are Lauren Galvin, Jennifer Ehman, Jessica Weaver, Meredith Marsico, Lisa Bartuccelli, and Dean Pollaro.

Neither plane, nor bird, the students study Carlo Maderno's facade to St. Peter's and the loggia where the pope gives his Urbi et Orbi address.

Illuminated by the light of knowledge (or is it just the sun filtering through ancient windows) students Katie Graham, Caehlin Bell, and Jessica Weaver learn about history and theology.

Dr. Dawson Vásquez gives a discourse on the achievements of Pope Gregory XIII, who sponsored educational initiatives in the wake of the Council of Trent, in front of his (Gregory's) tomb.

The spring 2004 group had the unique opportunity to visit the newly renovated Redemtoris Mater Chapel, a private chapel of Pope John Paul II, with mosaics by Jesuit artist Marko Rupnik and the Centro Aletti, located next to the Sala Clementina, where the Holy Father receives important guests. Here is the group outside the chapel in one of the loggia decorated by Raphael.

The students say arrivederici Roma as they gather in the Piazza Barbarini after the final group meal of the semester. The next day they leave Rome, some back home to the US others for some intensive European traveling.
