Naples Trip

Cave of the sibyl at Cumae

Castel at Baia

The Solfatara: Ancient entrance to the Underworld

The first day of the trip was spent in the lands of Greek and Roman mythology. We first stopped at the excavations of the ancient Greek city of Cumae where the legendary sibyl resided and gave words of wisdom to visitors where Prof. Laura Flusche lectured on the Aeneid. We then visited the ancient Roman resort town of Baia and concluded the day at what was believed in ancient times to be the entrance to the underworld: the Solfatara at Pozzuoli.

The second day we spent in the city of Naples, with a morning walk through the old quarter of Naples and an afternoon visit to the archeological museum. Our hotel for both nights overlooked the bay of Naples.

On the way back to Rome, we stopped at the village of Sperlonga, where the emperor Tiberius had his villa and Odysseus was believed to have encountered the sirens.

Mozzarella Farm

One of the highlights of our trip to the Naples area was a morning visit to a farm that produces the famous mozzarella di buffala, the mozzarella cheese made from buffalo milk.
