In the US

You will need certain documents to receive your student visa from the Italian consulate in the US. For the spring semester, CUA will process these applications for you at the Washington, DC, consulate. For the fall semester, DePaul will process them in Chicago.

Some documents that may be required:

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the validity date of the visa requested. The passport must have a blank page available for the visa to be affixed and must be signed.

  • Photocopy of the passport.

  • Visa application form to be signed by applicant in the presence of a Consular Officer.

  • One recent passport size photograph (2x2 inches in size, full face, front view, color).

  • Only for non-US citizens: proof of permanent residence in the U.S., in the form of a green card or valid U.S. long term visa. B1/ B2 visas are not accepted. Students must have a valid I-20 and exchange visitors a valid I-66.

  • A letter from DePaul for the fall or CUA for the spring attesting to your participation in the program in Rome.

  • Proof of health insurance that pays directly to Italian health facilities.

  • Proof that you have sufficient financial resources to spend 4 months in Italy.


In Rome

Once you arrive in Rome, you will need the following to get your permit of stay (permesso di soggiorno) from the immigration authorities. This must be done upon your arrival in Italy. It legitimizes your stay in the country. We will help you to obtain this. The following documents must be submitted to DePaul, CUA, or Loyola so that they can be sent to Rome.

  • 4 identical passport-size photos (those sheets of passport photos - small size - from CVS are ideal)

  • 3 photocopies every page of your passport, after you receive your visa

  • 3 photocopies of proof of health insurance coverage, unlimited and worldwide: the policy coverage must indicate that the Italian provider will be paid directly by Insurance Company. Bring the original with you to Italy.

  • The Letter from DePaul or CUA attesting to the fact that you will be studying in Rome. This will be stamped with an official number by the Italian consulate and returned to you with your passport and visa. Bring it along with 3 photocopies of it.

  • Cost

    • The current cost to process request a permesso di soggiorno is 73.12 euro. This must be paid in cash during the first week of your time in Italy.
